The difference between sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate

We will encounter some substances with similar chemical names, and we may be confused about their concepts and properties. So today Bergano Chemical will share the difference between sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate.

Sodium Carbonate

Soda Ash
Sodium Carbonate

Sodium Carbonate (Sodium Carbonate), is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na2CO3, molecular weight 105.99 , CAS code 497-19-8, also called soda ash, but the classification belongs to salt, not alkali, also known as soda or alkali ash in international trade. The production method of sodium carbonate is combined alkali method, ammonia alkali method, Lubran method, etc. It can also be refined by processing natural alkali. It is an important inorganic chemical raw material, mainly used in the production of flat glass, glass products and ceramic glaze. It is also widely used in household washing, acid neutralization and food processing.

Sodium bicarbonate

baking soda
Sodium Bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate, molecular formula NaHCO₃, is an inorganic compound with molecular weight 84.01, CAS code 144-55-8, also known as baking soda, is a white crystalline powder, odorless, salty, and easily soluble in water. It decomposes slowly in moist air or hot air, producing carbon dioxide, and decomposes completely when heated to 270℃. When it meets acid, it decomposes strongly and produces carbon dioxide. Sodium bicarbonate has wider application in analytical chemistry, inorganic synthesis, food industry, industrial production, agricultural and livestock production, etc.

I. The difference of physical properties

1、Physical properties of sodium carbonate

(1) Sodium carbonate is a white, odorless powder or granule at room temperature.
(2) solubility of sodium carbonate is easily soluble in water and glycerol.
(3) slightly soluble in anhydrous ethanol, insoluble in propanol.
(4) The solution shows alkaline, can make phenolphthalein turn red.

2, the physical properties of sodium bicarbonate

(1) Sodium bicarbonate is white crystal, or opaque monoclinic crystalline fine crystals.
(2) Specific gravity 2.15.
(3) Odorless, non-toxic, salty, soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol.
(4) Soluble in 10 parts of water at 25℃, soluble in 12 parts of water at about 18℃.
(5) Its aqueous solution is slightly alkaline due to hydrolysis, stable at room temperature, easily decomposed by heat, gradually decomposed above 50℃, completely losing carbon dioxide at 270℃, no change in dry air, slowly deliquescent in humid air.

Second, the difference of chemical properties

1, the chemical properties of sodium carbonate

(1) the aqueous solution of sodium carbonate is strongly alkaline (pH = 11.6) and has a certain degree of corrosion
(2) can be compounded with acid, such as sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid reaction, can also be compounded with some calcium salts, barium salt reaction.
(3) There are three kinds of sodium carbonate containing water of crystallization: Na2CO3-H2O, Na2CO3-7H2O and Na2CO3-10H2O.
(4) Stability and stability is strong, but can also be decomposed at high temperatures, generating sodium oxide and carbon dioxide.

2, the chemical properties of sodium bicarbonate

(1) Easily decomposed by heat.
(2) Slowly decompose in humid air. It starts to react at 50℃ to produce CO₂, and at 100℃ it all becomes sodium carbonate.
(3) It decomposes rapidly in weak acid, and its aqueous solution starts to decompose carbon dioxide and sodium carbonate at 20℃, and all of them decompose at boiling point.
(4) The solution made of cold water without stirring is only slightly alkaline to phenolphthalein test paper, and its alkalinity increases when it is placed or the temperature is raised. 25℃ freshly prepared 0.1mol/L aqueous solution has a pH of 8.3.
(5) Low toxicity, half lethal dose
