Application of Sodium Bicarbonate in Industry

Sodium bicarbonate is available in various grades and Bergano Chemicals can supply 3 grades of sodium bicarbonate: food grade, industrial grade and feed grade. Sodium bicarbonate is used in a wide range of industries such as animal feed, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, agriculture, manufacturing and cleaning products.

Some industrial applications of sodium bicarbonate will be briefly described below.

1. Flue gas treatment (FGT)

Flue gas is a pollutant produced by industrial processes, and pollutants such as hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids must be treated before they can be released into the environment. Sodium bicarbonate is used to treat such pollutants because of its high reactivity and ability to absorb flue gas in a short period of time. For example, baking soda can be applied to the desulfurization of flue gas and blowing of the media body. Since flue gas contains a certain amount of sulfur dioxide, which is extremely harmful to the environment and pipeline equipment, it is desulfurized by using the nature that baking soda can react with it in the presence of oxygen to produce sodium sulfate, water and carbon dioxide, and the treated products can be disposed of by Jane’s collection method.

2. Drilling industry

In the drilling industry, sodium bicarbonate is utilized to chemically deal with drilling mud when it comes to be contaminated with calcium ions from concrete or lime. Sodium bicarbonate responds with calcium ions to produce an inert calcium speed up that can be removed from the system.

3. Cosmetic industry

It is used in many cosmetics due to its abrasive and antibacterial properties. Sodium bicarbonate can be used to control the acid-base balance of cosmetics. In some cosmetic and personal care products, sodium bicarbonate is also used as an abrasive, deodorant and oral care agent.

4. Used book mild disinfectant

It has weak disinfection properties and it may be an effective bactericide against certain organisms. Used book dealers have found that sprinkling sodium bicarbonate on the pages will reduce the musty odor of old books.

5. Dry powder fire extinguisher

Because sodium bicarbonate releases carbon dioxide when heated, it is one of the most common dry chemical fire extinguishing materials, and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can be used for both Class B and Class C fires. Therefore sodium bicarbonate is used in fire extinguishers and is widely used in electrical fires.

6. Rubber industry

The rubber industry uses it in conjunction with alum and porous agent to act as a uniform porous for rubber and sponge production.

7. Metallurgical industry

Metallurgical industry is used as flux for casting steel ingots.

8. Machinery industry

Machinery industry is used as molding aid for casting steel (sand turning) sand.

9. Printing and dyeing industry

The printing and dyeing industry is used as color fixing agent for dyeing and printing, acid and alkali buffering agent, and post-treatment agent for fabric dyeing and finishing.

Complex plastic and polymer manufacturing use sodium bicarbonate as a purifying agent and catalyst. Sodium bicarbonate is also used in wool washing, silk and leather dyeing. As well as film production, tanning, mineral processing, smelting, metal heat treatment, and for the fiber and rubber industries.
